Karen Rea has been an active resident in Markham for the past 36 years. Born in Birmingham, England in 1962, Karen immigrated to Canada in 1978 and became a Canadian Citizen 2 years later. Her father, Ralph, and brother Stephen, live in Wales, while her mom, Shirley, lives in Port Royale, Nova Scotia. Upon coming to Canada, she finished school at Markham District High and worked for TD Canada Trust in Markham for 10 years as supervisor, liability and loans applications processor, and manager at the data processing centre. Later Karen moved into the collections business as both a senior collector, supervisor, and as legal coordinator till 2009 when she became a Real Estate agent.
For the past 3 years, Karen has devoted considerable time to working with residents and Markham Council addressing the public funding of the GTA Sports Arena, storm sewer funding, various zoning and development issues between residents and developers, recent parking bylaw policy inequities, and a selection of current budget issues. Karen has attended most committee and council meetings during this time gaining an in depth view as to the operation of the City of Markham.
Karen lives in the new Ward 4 and is the President of Markham Village City Ratepayers Association and sits as a Director of the Markham Citizens Coalition for Responsive Government. She is a School Mentor in the Big Brothers and Sisters Program, and active with the Heart and Stroke foundation as well as The Kidney Foundation.
